One hundred Democrats from around Des Moines County gathered Thursday to eat hamburgers and listen to candidates at the Democrats’ Boots n’ Jeans Fall Fundraiser.

Congressional hopeful Rita Hart of Charles City wasn’t raised by a pair of staunch Democrat parents. Instead, her parents were staunch opposites — her father a Democrat, her mother a Republican. Hart and her eight siblings listened every night as her parents debated around the dinner table.
